SDP calls for Keir Starmer to resign and for treason to be considered for Mandelson over Epstein files scandal

London, (04 February 2026) – The Social Democratic Party (SDP) notes with serious concern the latest disclosures arising from the U.S. Department of Justice’s release of Jeffrey Epstein-related documents, which implicate former government minister Lord Peter Mandelson in the sharing of confidential UK government information with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Crucially, we note the admission by the Prime Minister that he appointed Mandelson as the UK ambassador to the United States in the full knowledge of his ongoing relationship with Epstein. In so doing, he has displayed both appalling judgement and ethical failure.

These alone are grounds for Starmer to resign.

As for Mandelson, we welcome the investigation action by the Metropolitan Police, and call for a punitive sentence if found guilty. Mandelson’s actions are of national concern on the following grounds:

Firstly, his alleged insider dealing in passing market sensitive government information to and receiving subsequent favours from Epstein. This would seem to constitute a blatant misuse of public office.

Secondly, given Epstein’s role as a procurer of under-age children, charges of sex trafficking, child sexual abuse, and complete contempt for his victims this raises very serious questions as to the knowledge Mandelson held of these egregious crimes whilst he was engaging in his continued relationship with Epstein.

The alleged actions of Mandelson are in such contradiction to the national interest that we would strongly welcome and urge the following outcomes in the event of a guilty verdict:

  1. Immediate revocation of Mandelson’s peerage.
  2. Maximum sentencing within current legislation.
  3. A robust parliamentary inquiry to determine how and why an individual with documented links to Epstein was ever appointed to senior diplomatic position.
  4. A new legal precedent be set in the national interest to deter such egregious acts of treason by governmental officials in future, including the introduction of new legal statutes to further this cause.

William Clouston, SDP Leader, said:

“This is likely to be the tip of the iceberg. Starmer must go. It is astonishing how un-patriotic the people who govern this country are. Instead of thinking of the national interest, they are cosying up to foreign investors and selling off our assets. Frankly, it’s a disgrace.

We unequivocally support the harshest sentencing possible for Mandelson in the event of a guilty verdict. No individual — regardless of political stature — should be above scrutiny when actions appear to undermine ethical governance.

In a competent and confident system this might be labelled treasonous.”
