Hilary Salt

Deputy Leader

Hilary spent her professional career building and managing a leading pensions consultancy. She has been a scheme actuary, employer advisor and acted as an independent trustee. She has also advised the trade union movement for over 30 years, assisting in bargaining situations and advising on the pension schemes run by trade unions for their staff. She is also a member of the council of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. Hilary has two grown up sons, a lovingly tended garden, a VW campervan and a dog named Friday. Hilary joined the SDP in 2020 and has now taken on the role of Deputy Leader.

Party Leader

William joined the SDP in 1982 and campaigned in general elections, local elections and by-elections throughout the 1980’s. By 1989 he was on the SDP’s approved list of Parliamentary Candidates. William later spent four years in the Conservative party, becoming a District Councillor in 1999 and serving on Tynedale Council until 2003. A former Parliamentary Candidate, he presently serves on Corbridge Parish Council in Northumberland.

William became leader of the Social Democratic Party in early 2018 and was re-elected in March 2020, obtaining 89% of votes returned by members. William holds first and Masters degrees in Urban Planning and Property Management respectively and read Philosophy at Durham University at Postgraduate level.

Stephen Balogh

Party Chair

Stephen Balogh is active in non-profit and public policy organisations that promote the flourishing of society through the thoughtful application of socially responsible, small-c conservative politics. Following a 30-year business career, he now devotes his time to initiatives aimed at community building from local neighbourhood to international levels, whether by means of social, political or commercial exchange. Many will recognise Stephen as New Culture Forum’s National Organiser, helping to establish a network of “NCF Locals” groups around the country, and he has acted as contributing author to two NCF publications.

Having been a political wanderer for most of his life, Stephen joined the SDP in summer 2023, recognising for the first time a party whose philosophical underpinning and policy prescriptions chimed strongly with his own desire for positive political change in the UK. He stood as candidate in his home constituency of Ealing Central & Acton in the 2024 General Election.

Robert Malyn

Party Secretary

Robert has a degree in Business Economics and Finance and has worked in the IT, retail, travel, civil engineering, construction and insurance sectors in both the UK and Ireland. He was a member of UKIP from 2010 to 2016 and held several party roles in Scotland including MEP assistant, branch officer and a 2015 General Election candidate. Robert joined the SDP in 2016 and became Party Secretary in the same year with the aim of re-establishing the party as a major force in British politics.

Adam Hibbert

Head of Policy

Adam is a management consultant experienced in financial services, journalism and publishing, and a published author. Prior to a long period of ‘political homelessness’ he was an active member of the left tradition that gave rise to Spiked. He previously served as the SDP’s South East Chair before taking up the role of Head of Policy in February 2025. He was proud to stand in the 2024 general election as the SDP’s candidate for Sevenoaks, where he and his family live.

Daniel Whetstone
Yorkshire

 Daniel is Chair of the SDP’s Yorkshire and Humberside region.  As a young man he completed an apprenticeship in plumbing and Gas Engineering and later ran his own small business.  Over the past ten years he has worked with children with special needs and has recently undertaken volunteer work for men struggling with their mental health.

Daniel has held regional party roles of DNO, Secretary, Treasurer and social organiser. He has represented the SDP in three local elections as well as the 2019 General Election.  Daniel has contributed to several other candidates’ campaigns as campaign manager and agent.

As one of the party’s most experienced members Daniel always been happy to share his experiences with others.  Daniel is married, lives in Leeds and is a keen Rugby League and Cricket enthusiast.

Sebastian Moore
North West

Sebastian has spent most of his adult life working in education having taught English abroad for many years. Originally from Dorset, he moved to Manchester in 2022 and fell in love with the city. He joined the SDP the following year, drawn by its alignment with his values and agreeing on the need for a new economic model.

He stood as the SDP candidate for Manchester Central in the General Election and is now focused on strengthening the party’s presence in the North West. He’s passionate about geopolitics, languages, and reading.

Daniel McNay
Wales

Daniel is originally from the North East of England, and moved to Wales following a stint in the armed forces. He has since permanently settled in Wales and raised a young family. He has a keen interest in local matters and Welsh culture in general.

Daniel joined the SDP in 2020 after being attracted to its patriotism, dedication to freedom of expression, centre-left economics and its rejection of political correctness. Despite voting Remain in the EU referendum, the undemocratic attempts to overturn the decision of the British people left him feeling he had no choice but to turn away from Labour in favour of the SDP. Daniel believes the SDP succeeds where all other parties fail when it comes to having just the right balance of liberal, traditionalist and communitarian attitudes.

Daniel is a dedicated supporter of Hartlepool United, and also follows local Welsh side Holywell Town FC. He is also passionate about British and European history.

Tom Chittenden
North East

Tom spends most of his time either working as a mechanical design engineer or at home with his wife, two school-age daughters and cat named Tiggy. Any free time is often spent in the gym or doing DIY. Tom joined the SDP in 2019. He stood as a candidate in his home constituency of North Durham in the 2024 General Election.

Kyn Pomlett
South East

Kyn is a retired software engineer and technical consultant experienced in organisational change. The intransigence of Parliament to accept the result of the Brexit referendum led Kyn to join the SDP. He has stood in two local elections and the 2024 Parliamentary election for the SDP in South Oxfordshire.

He took over as Chair of the South East region in March 2025.

Adam Williams
YSD

Adam joined the SDP in April 2024 and campaigned in Coventry South for Alastair Mellon during the 2024 General Election. He joined the YSD executive as Deputy Chair in August 2024, then was elected Chair in January 2025.

He’s been involved in politics since 2017 and comes from a Red Tory and Catholic background.

He holds an MA in Crusader Studies and a BA in Medieval and Early Modern History with a particular interest in 13th Century Crusading. He currently works in administration, and has hobbies such as model making, athletics and archery. He is based in the West Midlands.
