STATEMENT BY PARTY LEADER WILLIAM CLOUSTON ON FORTHCOMING EUROPEAN ELECTIONS

SDP leader William Clouston has confirmed that the party will not field candidates in the European parliamentary election following a unanimous decision tonight by the party’s National Coordinating Committee.

Mr Clouston said: “This election lacks basic democratic legitimacy, coming almost three years after the UK voted to leave the EU. Its announcement by the Government at the eleventh hour precludes smaller parties from competing fairly.

The Social Democratic Party will focus on other electoral targets this year, aided by the party’s astonishing membership growth.
