David Bettney Announced as SDP Candidate for South Yorkshire Mayor

4th April 2022 – The Social Democratic Party (SDP) today announces David Bettney as the party’s candidate for South Yorkshire Mayor.

David is a former solider who served in the Army for 22 years, which included tours in Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan. David grew up on a Council estate in South Yorkshire and, after joining the Army as a Trooper at the age of 17, rose through the ranks to eventually become a Regimental Sergeant Major in the Light Dragoons. Since leaving the Army over a decade ago David has become a serial entrepreneur in the oil and gas industry, having built several construction, logistics and storage companies from the ground-up in the Middle East.

David offers voters in South Yorkshire the opportunity to vote for the the SDP – the fastest growing political party in Britain – a party which is patriotic and is determined to re-build Britain’s industrial and manufacturing base.

David Bettney says:

“My priority is to boost skills training for young people. Our bloated university sector needs to be slimmed down. Instead, greater investment is needed in apprenticeships and vocational skills – urgently required to re-build our industrial base. We need real jobs to produce real things.

I will also clean up South Yorkshire’s towns and cities and select flagship historic sites for regeneration. Homelessness and street begging shames our society. I will urgently establish a Taskforce to develop secure hostels for rough sleepers.”

William Clouston, Leader of the SDP says:

“Voters in South Yorkshire have the opportunity to elect David Bettney as Mayor – a candidate who not only shares their values but offers an economic plan which serves their interests. The Labour Conservative duopoly has gutted British industry and it’s urgent we re-build it. In David they have a genuinely local candidate who has built business from scratch and who has the energy and vision to see projects through.

We are also delighted that David’s candidacy for South Yorkshire Mayor has received the formal endorsement of Reform UK, formerly The Brexit Party. I have thanked Reform UK’s leader Richard Tice for his kind offer of support in this campaign.

Whilst proudly independent, it’s in the tradition of the Social Democratic Party to work with parties with similar aims. Our economic policies differ but the SDP shares Reform UK’s commitment to political renewal, fair voting and to a Britain which governs itself. We hope that the South Yorkshire Mayoral election will be the first step – the foundation – of greater future cooperation between the SDP and Reform UK.”
